City Commemorative Æ Mule 14mm. Contemporary Imitation of Treveri issue, uncertain mint, circa AD 330-348. CONSTANTINO I I I I I, laureate, draped(?) and cuirassed bust to left / She-wolf standing to left, suckling Romulus and Remus; wreath(?) flanked by two stars above, TRS in exergue. Cf. A. Marsden, "Contemporary Imitations of Constantine's Wolf & Twins Coinage" in Treasure Hunting, June-July 2001, p. 23-4, fig. 4 and 7. For prototype, cf. RIC VII 553 (struck under Constantine I). 0.98g, 14mm, 11h.

Near Very Fine.

Auctioned in association with and on behalf of Numismática Lucernae, Jaén.

Marsden's study identified two major mints producing counterfeit coinage in Britain and three smaller sites based on stylistic linkages. However, the more bizarre and varied imitative types remain unassigned. This coin is an intriguing example of the imitations which fall outside of Marsden's clear categorisation of Wolf & Twins imitative types. The obverse combines the legend and bust of the commemorative CONSTANTINOPOLIS coinage with imperial portraiture, resulting in a garbled legend and a bust whose hairline is reminiscent of a helmet. The reverse appears close to the prototype of the she-wolf issue at Treveri, although the 'R' in the mintmark is more similar to a wreath.
