KINGS OF MACEDON. Amyntas III. Circa 393-370/69 B.C. AR stater. 9.29 gm. 20 mm. Aigai mint. Bearded head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Horse standing right, AMY above, NTA to right, all within linear square within incuse square. HGC 3.1, 828. SNG ANS 87 (same obverse die). SNG Copenhagen 512. SNG Ashmolean 2439. Good Very Fine; deep old cabinet toning over pleasing surfaces; well centered and well struck. Rare.

With the end of the line of Perkikkas II, Amyntas III, heir through the line of Alexander I's youngest son, began the work of founding the unified Macedonian state. A gifted diplomat, Amyntas created alliances as needed in turn with the Chalkidian League at Olynthos, Sparta, and Athens. In time he was succeeded by his three sons. The youngest was Philip II, father of Alexander III "the Great."
