THESSALY. Larissa. Early to mid 4th century B.C. AR drachm. 6 gm. 18 mm. Head of the nymph Larissa three-quarter facing left, border of dots / Horse to left with straight legs, nibbling on plant on the ground line; ΛΑΡ[ΙΣAI] above. Lorber, Early, 40.1 (these dies). BCD Thessaly II 227 (this coin). Good Very Fine; lightly toned over fresh surfaces; reverse possibly overstruck on an earlier Larissa drachm. Attractive coin of exceptional style, a masterpiece of classic Greek art.
Ex BCD Thessaly II (CNG Triton XV, 3 January 2012, lot 227, tags included). Ex Claude Burgan FPL "Printemps-Été" 1987, 206, acquired for FF 3500; see also his MBS of 6 December 1986, lot 313 [in the text] but erroneously illustrated as lot 311.
From BCD: "The obverse die of this coin is in an earlier state than in Lorber 40.1(a). The remains of the undertype on the reverse...could be the edge of a sandal, as featured on the reverse of the earliest Larissa drachms." All of BCD's personal photos and tags are included with this lot, adding immediacy to the provenance.
