Claudius I (AD 41-54). AE sestertius (35mm, 24.95 gm, 7h). NGC VF 5/5 - 2/5, countermark. Rome, ca. AD 41-50. TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP, laureate head of Claudius I right; PROB rectangular countermark in right field / EX S C / OB / CIVES / SERVATOS, legend in four lines in oak-wreath. RIC I 96. Pangerl 23.

Ex Richard Baker Collection (Classical Numismatic Group, Auction 111, 29 May 2019), lot 478; purchased from Edward J. Waddell, June 1984

Countermark likely applied during the reign of Nero (AD 54-68), possibly in Gallia Lugdunensis. The mark stands for PROB(are), which was one of a series of denominational countermarks on Julio-Claudian sestertii, in this case marked approved/certified for value as a sestertius. Other marks include DV and DVP to revalue to a dupondius and AS to revalue to an as.
