Nikolaos, spatharokandidatos and basilikos of the silk, middle 11th century. Seal (Lead, 25 mm, 8.08 g, 12 h). Θ / NI/K-Λ/OC/A Nimbate facing bust of Saint Nicholas, raising his right hand in benediction and holding a book of Gospels in his left hand. Rev. +KЄ R,Θ, / NIKOΛA / CPAΘAP,K/ΔΔ, S R' TH/C MЄTA/[ΞHC] in six lines. Unpublished in the standard references. Cf. DO Seals BZS.1958.106.1602 and BZS.1955.1.3281 for two other seals of a "basilikos tes metaxes". An interesting seal with a seldomly attested office. Good very fine.
