ISLANDS OFF CARIA, Chalke. Circa 400-325 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 8 mm, 0.66 g, 4 h). Female head to right. Rev. X-A Spearhead. HGC 6, 1282. SNG von Aulock 8736-8737 (as 'incertum'). Rare. Some pitting, otherwise, good very fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
The attribution of this rare issue to the small island of Chalke (modern Halki) west of Rhodes is not secured, but likely. The spearhead on the reverse may serve as a pun on the city's name, which translates as 'bronze'.
