ISLANDS OFF IONIA, Chios. Circa 431-410 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 21.5 mm, 14.66 g). Sphinx seated to left; to left, bunch of grapes above a Chian amphora; to right, above the sphinx's tail, astragalos. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Baldwin 54. Mavrogordato 36, pl. III, 14 (same obverse die). Same dies as Künker 94 (2004), 1124. Very rare variety. Mavrogordato only knew of a single example in Munich. Strongly buffed, otherwise, very fine.
