Q. Sicinius, 49 BC. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.93 g, 9 h), Rome. FORT P.R Diademed head of Fortuna to right. Rev. III. - VIR / Q.SICINIVS Filleted palm branch and winged caduceus in saltire; above the crossing, wreath. Babelon (Sicinia) 5. Crawford 440/1. CRI 410. Sydenham 938. Light toning. Good fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Künker FPL 108, May 1994, 93.

The moneyer Q. Sicinius came from a noble family but is otherwise little known. He sided with Pompey during the Civil War and fled east along with the rest of the Pompeians once Caesar occupied Rome. The types on this issue show Sicinius' sympathies: the legend and the head of Fortuna on the obverse refer to the Fortune of the Roman People, while the design on the reverse consist exclusively of symbols that refer to Pompey's accomplishments.
