Maurice Tiberius, 582-602. Half Tremissis (Gold, 16 mm, 0.74 g, 6 h), Constantinople, 583/4-602. D N TIbERI P P AVC Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Tiberius to right. Rev. VICTORI mAVRI AVG / CONOB Cross potent. Cf. DOC 14, MIBE 20 and SB 488 for the normal tremisses. See Sincona 37, 2017, 153 for another, and very similar, half tremissis of Maurice, along with an interesting note on half tremisses in general. Extremely rare. Crudely struck. Crinkly flan, otherwise, nearly very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex G. Hirsch 161, 22 February 1989, 1236.

Why half tremisses were struck - and they are invariably minted from tremissis dies - is uncertain, but they are known from a number of emperors of the 6th-early 8th centuries. They were probably used for donatives of some kind.
