Kings of Thrace, Lysimachos AR Tetradrachm. Byzantium, circa 245-early 220s BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander to right, wearing horn of Ammon; c/m: ΠY over prow with dolphin terminal, monogram below, within incuse oval / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΛYΣIMAXOY, Athena Nikephoros seated to left, arm resting on shield, spear in background; monogram to outer left. Cf. Marinescu issue 41 (similar monogram in inner left field) (O42/R-); Thompson -; Müller -; For similar pieces with this c/m type, see M. Thompson, "A Countermarked Hoard from Büyükçekmece" in MN VI (1954) p. 17-8. 16.76g, 29mm, 1h.

Good Fine; attractively toned. Very clear countermark. Apparently unpublished with the monogram in the outer left field.

From the inventory of a UK dealer.

Despite the scratch to the monogram, the obv. die link to Marinescu issue 41 supports the theory that this coin is an unrecorded variant of that group.

Thompson writes that "The prow counter stamp, which occurs on at least twenty-six of the Büyükçekmece Hoard coins, indicates the mint of Byzantium. In general the type is similar to that found on the coinages of Cius, Sinope and other mints, but this prow, with its whimsical dolphin adjunct and TY lettering, is unmistakably Byzantine." (p. 21) and dates the countermarks to the second half of the third century BC.
