First edition. Folio [43.5 by 30 cm], later brown quarter calf with mottled sides; spine ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt; marbled endpapers. (4), 26, (2) pages; 32 + 4 exceptionally fine plates produced using the medal ruling machine technique, with tissue guards, depicting medals and coins [plus one bis plate]. Mild foxing and spotting. Minor wear to boards, which may be earlier, though the spine is later. Near fine, overall. Especially important volumes of this extraordinary twenty-volume work, the 19th century's outstanding contribution to medallic and glyptic art. The massive, extensively illustrated work has never been approached in concept or scope and, after the better part of two centuries, some sections have yet to be superseded and remain essential sources of information.
