Wayte Raymond's Copy, with the Supplement
Millin, Chevalier, (and James Millingen). MEDALLIC HISTORY OF NAPOLEON. A COLLECTION OF ALL THE MEDALS, COINS, AND JETTONS, RELATING TO HIS ACTIONS AND REIGN. FROM THE YEAR 1796 TO 1815. London: Printed for the Editor, and Sold by Rodwell and Martin, New Bond-Street, 1819. vi, (2), 112, (8) pages; 60 engraved plates of medals. [bound with] SUPPLEMENT. (2), 41, (1) pages; 14 engraved plates of medals numbered 61–74. 4to, later maroon cloth, gilt. Some spotting and discoloration. Very good. The first illustrated catalogue on Napoleonic medals and only the second work written on the topic, published both in English and French editions in 1819. The work is based on a continuation of Chevalier Aubin Louis Millin's work on French revolutionary medals, covering Napoleonic medals up to 1806. Editor Millingen extends coverage to Napoleon's exile in 1815. David Block, in "Napoleonic Medal Books Have Problems" (The Asylum, Summer, 1985), notes: "The accuracy of most of the engravings leaves much to be desired but the notes are important... The translation is done so well that it's impossible to separate Millin's words from Millingen's, which makes it difficult to decide whether some remarks are an eye-witness account or an editor's opinion." The only English edition: much less frequently offered than the French edition. Scarce, particularly with the supplement. Clain-Stefanelli 14541. Engel & Serrure 4596. Ex Wayte Raymond Library, with his bookplate.
