Abbé Rochon's 1792 Essay on Coining
Rochon, M. ESSAI SUR LES MONNOIES ANCIENNES ET MODERNES. Paris: L.F. Prault, 1792. xvi, 167, (1) pages; 6 folding engraved plates depicting minting technology, engraved by Sellier after drawings by Fossier. [bound with] Rochon, M. APPERÇU PRESENTÉ AU COMITÉ DES MONNOIES DE L'ASSEMBLÉE NATIONALE. N.p., n.d. (Paris, mai 1791). 23, (1) pages. [bound with] Rochon, M. COMPTE RENDU DES EXPÉRIENCES QUI ONT ÉTÉ FAITES SUR LA MONNOIE COULÉE ET MOULÉE, EN MÉTAL DE CLOCHES. Paris: Prault, 1791. (2), 17, (1) pages. [bound with] Girod, J. DICTIONNAIRE SPÉCIAL ET CLASSIQUE DES MONNAIES, POIDS, MESURES, DIVISIONS DU TEMPS, CHEZ LES GRECS, LES ROMAINS, LES JUIFS ET LES ÉGYPTIENS. Paris & Lyon: Rusand, 1827. xv, (1), 91, (1). Four works, bound in one volume 8vo, contemporary green calf-backed marbled boards; spine ruled and lettered in gilt. A little scuffed, but intact and rather charming. Very good or better. Very scarce. Abbé Alexis-Marie Rochon (1741–1817) was a French scientist who published on a variety of topics. In his early years, he was involved in various geographic and maritime expeditions exploring navigation routes; in later life, he devoted his studies primarily to optics. The main work here present is cited in Sir John Craig's 1953 The Mint, but appears to be generally underappreciated in wider numismatic circles. Richard Margolis felt that this volume came from the Adolphe Dewismes collection, sold by Peteghem in 1875 (see the catalogue included in Part Two of this Sale). Ex Michel Lucas Library, with his bookplate; ex 1991 Joint Kolbe/Spink New York Book Auction, lot 301.
