With Plates Engraved via Medal Ruling Machine
Toussenel, Théodore. PRÉCIS CHRONOLOGIQUE DE L'HISTOIRE DE FRANCE, POUR SERVIR DE TEXTE EXPLICATIF AUX PLANCHES GRAVÉES SUR ACIER PAR LE PROCÉDÉ COLLAS, D'APRÈS LA COLLECTION DES MÉDAILLES HISTORIQUES DES ROIS DE FRANCE, DONT LES COINS SONT DÉPOSÉS À LA MONNAIE ROYALE DE PARIS. Paris, 1844. 4to, original printed boards. (12) pages; 4 double-page plates engraved by medal-ruling machine, bound in on hinges, illustrating 72 medals. Moderate foxing. Spine lettered by hand. Very good or better. A very scarce work providing descriptions of the 72 medals illustrated using this innovative technique, perfected in France by Achille Collas. They were engraved with a pantographic ruling machine and, in addition to being of great visual appeal, the illustrations were the most accurate ever achieved. This technical innovation, widely heralded at the time, was, within a few decades, overtaken by photographic printing processes and is relatively little known today.
