Rare Work on Pierre Lorthior
Van Hende, Ed. MP. LORTHIOR GRAVEUR DES MÉDAILLES DU ROI, NÉ A LILLE EN 1733 ET SON OEUVRE. Lille: L. Danel, 1898. 8vo, contemporary blue quarter morocco with marbled sides; spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers; original printed card covers bound in. 76 pages; 13 fine plates. Inscribed to Fernand Mazerolle (Hommage respecteux de l'auteur) and signed by the author on the opening blank. Printed review by Mazerolle, from the Gazette numismatique, bound in; an 8-page overview of Lorthior, also by Van Hende, also inscribed by the author, is laid in. Spine a bit rubbed, else near fine. Very rare, with exceptional plates. Pierre Lorthior (1733–1813) served as medallist for the king, but managed to survive the transition of the Revolution and performed work on coins, medals, and assignats thereafter. An attractive association copy.
