The Very Rare Carlos de Beistegui Collection
Beistegui, Carlos de. LA COLLECTION DE MONNAIES ET MÉDAILLES DE M. CARLOS DE BEISTEGUI. Paris: Les Beaux-Arts, Édition d'Études et de Documents, Exemplaire imprimé spécialement pour M. Robert Doré, (1933–1934). 4to, loose signatures and plates, as issued, housed in recent clamshell box of tan linen, lettered in brown. xii, 110, (2) pages; title printed in red and black; 1226 descriptions of coins and medals, the great majority depicted on the 64 very fine plates. Original folding box, quite worn, also included. Contents fine or very nearly so. One of only "80 exemplaires hors commerce" reserved for friends of Carlos de Beistegui, this copy was presented to Robert Doré. The original edition of the catalogue of this remarkable collection, part of the Cabinet des Médailles at the Bibliothèque Nationale. Predominently comprised of superb gold coins from ancient to modern times and especially rich in important French coins. (The first 13 plates are devoted to ancient coins, hence its listing in this section.) Label of Nigrotti Gian Battista on inside front cover of the original portfolio. The Jameson example sold for $7500 hammer at our 2014 sale of the Herb Kreindler library. It had also had a new box made for it, as the originals tend to become spotted and worn.
