Jara & Luedeking on Chilean Coins
Jara M., Carlos León, and Alan K. Luedeking. LAS PRIMERAS ACUÑACIONES DE LA CASA DE MONEDA DE SANTIAGO DE CHILE: 1749–1772 / THE EARLY COINAGE OF THE MINT OF SANTIAGO DE CHILE: 1749–1772. Santiago de Chile, 2005. 4to, original pictorial boards. 694 pages; illustrated throughout. Bilingual. Binding slightly cocked; else fine. A very important work examining the intriguing and mysterious coins of the earliest period of the Santiago Mint. The work is groundbreaking in that it provides for the first time the complete and accurate mintage figures for all of the coins of the colonial period to 1772. Perhaps its most notable discovery is that the dates on these coins corresponds to the year in which the silver or gold was assayed and taxed, which may or may not correspond to the year in which the coin was struck.
