Very Rare 1871 London Sale
Puttick & Simpson. CATALOGUE OF THE IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF COINS IN GOLD, SILVER, AND COPPER, FORMED BY CAPTAIN FREDERICK PARR, (LATE H.M.S.) OF THE HAWTHORNS, CLEVEDON, SOMERSETSHIRE, COMPRISING VERY FINE AND RARE SPECIMENS OF ORIENTAL, SPANISH, PORTUGUESE, AMERICAN, AND OTHER FOREIGN COINS, ALSO BRILLIANT SPECIMENS OF ENGLISH, EAST INDIAN, COLONIAL, & FOREIGN PATTERNS AND PROOFS, MOSTLY OF THE SOHO MINT, ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MEDALS, EXPENSIVELY MADE CABINETS, ETC. London, August 14–15, 1871. Small 8vo, later red cloth, gilt. (2), 26 pages; 369 lots. Trimmed, slightly too far for the title page, though body of catalogue is unaffected. Very good or better. A very rare catalogue offering an unusual and interesting collection. The first day's sale comprised Islamic, Spanish and Portuguese coins, many of them gold. The second day focused mostly on English and Colonial Patterns and Proofs, many of them Soho Mint products (and many of them restrikes, according to a note in this copy), as well as early American gold and silver coins (including 1796 and 1797 half dollars), what appears to be a Continental Currency piece in brass, a Washington before Boston in silver, a William Washington at Cowpens in silver, and so on. Manville & Robertson cite only one copy-in the British Library-noting that it lacks the title page.
