The W.J. Davis Collection Sale
Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge. CATALOGUE OF A COLLECTION OF RARE TRADESMEN'S TOKENS, THE PROPERTY OF W.J. DAVIS, ESQ. ... CONTAINING SPECIMENS IN GOLD, SILVER, COPPER AND TIN, OF ALL COUNTIES ISSUING TOKENS OF GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND OF THE EIGHTEENTH & THE NINETEENTH CENTURIES... London, 11–15 March 1901. Crown 4to, later brown cloth, gilt; original printed paper covers bound in within archival sleeves. (4), 93, (1) pages; 820 lots; 5 fine autotype plates. Hand-priced in ink. Very good. Scarce and important. Davis (1848–1934) was the author of the standard reference on Warwickshire tokens and was still working on his encyclopedic study of the 19th-century British tokens at the time of the sale. Indeed, it is thought that Davis sold the pieces offered in this catalogue in order to help finance the publication of his magnum opus. Allan Davisson and David Griffiths have noted that S.H. Hamer purchased 156 lots in the sale, which was a success, realizing a total of £1630. Manville & Robertson page 195.
