Later Portrait of Matthew Boulton
Cardon, A., after W. Evans. MATTHEW BOULTON, ESQ. F.R.S. & S.A FROM AN ORIGINAL PICTURE BY SIR WILLIAM BEECHEY, R.A. IN THE POSSESSION OF HIS SON, MATTHEW ROBINSON BOULTON, ESQ. Published Feb. 17, 1812, by T. Cadell & W. Davies, Strand, London. Matted in oval format 36.5 by 28 cm within 50.5 by 40 cm gilt and wood frame. Some minor foxing in background. Near fine. A portrait of Boulton in his later years. William Beechey (1753–1839) was one of the foremost English portrait painters of his time. The painting is generally dated to 1799, though the original appears to have been lost. It was first engraved in 1801 and has become a well-known portrait of Boulton through these engravings-indeed, it was the basis for the portrait of Boulton on the 2011 Bank of England £50 note.
