Original Coin Sketches by Jean-Pierre Droz
Droz, Jean-Pierre. SKETCHES IN INK OF PROPOSED DESIGNS FOR THE REVERSE OF THE 1786 ÉCU DE CALONNE. Unsigned sheet [21 by 18.5 cm] with three renditions of reverse design elements in India ink over pencil. Unsigned, but provenance established (see comments). Paper matted to 20.5 by 18 cm within a gilt wooden frame measuring 33 by 30.5 cm. Old folds, not distracting. Fine. [with] Droz, Jean-Pierre. STUDIES, MOSTLY IN PENCIL, OF VARIOUS REVERSE DESIGNS FOR FRENCH COINAGE. Unsigned sheet [22 by 17.5 cm] with pencil renditions on both sides of reverse design elements; one executed in ink, with a few others encircled in ink in India ink over pencil. Unsigned, but provenance established (see comments). Paper matted to 20 by 16 cm within a double-sided gilt wooden frame measuring 35 by 30 cm. Old folds; near fine. Original coin art by one of the finest engravers of his day. Both sheets here present were offered as lot 47 in the 1 mars 1982 Maison Platt (Paris) auction of Ensemble de monnaies, dessins et sculptures provenant de la Famille Droz, where they were purchased by Richard Margolis. The first sheet here present was described in the Platt catalogue as being "sans doute en relation avec l'essai du Louis de Calonne," but Margolis felt that this depicts instead the écu de Calonnne. They brought FF2600 in 1982.
