Ink Anti-Slavery Drawing
Gill, Henry [after Josiah Wedgwood]. INK RENDITION OF WEDGWOOD'S FAMOUS ABOLITIONIST DESIGN, "AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER?" Early 19th century. Image based on the Wedgwood design used by the Society for the Purpose of Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade's efforts, with the handwritten legend "Remember them that are in bonds as bound with them -Hebrews Chap XIII ver 3." Paper measuring 19 by 15 cm, matted to 14.5 by 12 cm within a modern gilt frame measuring 28.5 by 26.5 cm. Frame backing removed for examination, else fine. A striking ink rendition of this famous design, used by the Society for the Purpose of Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade in its publications and promotions. The design was the work of a craftsman with the Wedgwood firm, and Wedgwood's heavy use of it made it the single most recognizable piece of political art in its time. It was used on British trade tokens of the 1790s, as well as elsewhere. Unfortunately, no provenance information accompanies the item.
