Original Plan of the Bank Mint at St. Petersburg
Olenin [Olinien], Alexis. PLAN OF THE BANK MINT / ПЛАНЪ БАНКОВАГО МОНЕТНАГО ДВОРА. Erected for the usage of the Imperial Bank in S Petersbourgh with the Explanation of the Building and machinary as they are at present. Delineated by Alexis Olenin, Esqr. Drawn by the arch: G: Baboshin. Hand-drawn, tinted and lettered architectural plan with detailed keys in both Russian and English. Exceptional headpiece at top center showing Paul I's crest of a double-headed Russian eagle, enwreathed with the Arms of St. George within a Maltese cross, flanked by ribbons and scrollwork on each side leading to depictions of a Russian medal on the left and a 1797 British "Cartwheel" reverse for the Soho-produced penny and twopence. Plan matted to 66 by 49.5 cm within a modern 89.5 by 73 cm wood and gilt frame. The upper right corner of the plan shows wrinkles and a small tear, not affecting any part of the lettering or illustration; other, less noticeable wrinkles can also be seen. Would benefit from some slight restoration and new framing, but still very good. The highly detailed original architectural plan of this failed attempt on the part of Tsar Paul I's administration to bypass Matthew Boulton's proposals for a modernized mint (developed during the reign of Catherine II). Given the elaborate headpiece and the use of tinting, this was presumably made for presentation to one of the more notable parties involved in the project. Depicted on page 84 of Richard Doty's The Soho Mint & the Industrialization of Money.
