Russia Medals (3) 1883 Consecration of the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow Obverse: In the centre of a cross the eye of God in a radiant triangle, in angles: Portrait medallions of Alexander I, Nicholas I, Alexander II and Alexander III, Reverse: View of the Cathedral. 77mm diameter in bronze, weighing 187.38 grammes by V.Alexeev VF cleaned. In 1812 Alexander I pledged to build a cathedral as thanks to Divine Providence for the retreat of Napoleon Bonaparte from Moscow. The cornerstone was first laid in 1839. On May 25, 1883 – the day of Alexander III's coronation – the cathedral, the largest church of Orthodoxy, was consecrated. In 1931, by order of Stalin's minister Kaganovich, the cathedral was reduced to rubble in order to make room for a monument to Socialism. This was never built. In February of 1990 the Russian Orthodox Church received permission to rebuild the cathedral. Over one million Muscovites contributed and the cathedral was consecrated once more on August 19, 2000. 1713 Second Expedition of the Russian Fleet to Finland - Trusting in Hope for Success. 68mm diameter in copper by O.
