Lower Canada copper "Wellington" Mule 1/2 Penny Token Dated 1814 and 1815 AU55 Brown NGC, Br-Unl (Br-879 for reverse), WE-Unl, Withers-1581 (RRR), this piece. The obverse shows the date 1815 and the reverse 1814. Purchased from Warren Baker on 6-6-93, with a letter to Mr Partrick from Baker stating, "Wellington/Broke rev. The piece is a mule of the obv. of Davis Non-local, no. 93, and rev. of Br. 879, C.327, 329. The Wellington obv., which typically appears with an unlaureated bust of Blucher, is the only Wellington that previously had no association with Canada. This unique coin, for the first time, links the Wellington and Nova Scotia series. Clearly, many of the Nova Scotian pieces were turned out by the same hand, i.e. Turnpenny. This is another new piece of information, known only because of the discovery of this piece. The typical Nova Scotian bust obverses portray George III. Why Broke's famous battle scene would have as it's a portrait of Wellington is a mystery. It appears to be from a very early die state, and is in a better state of preservation than any Broke reverse that I have seen. The edge is typical of the Broke coppers. It is my opinion preceded any of the Broke issues and was either a test piece, or was muled for collectors of the day, or was a simple error." This letter, on Warren Baker's stationary, was written to Mr. Partrick on June 3, 1993.
A piece that seems to be the only example of this type known and it was sold for $4500 in 1993.
