MACEDON, Neapolis. 4th century BC. Uniface AV Medaillion (10mm, 1.11 g). Head of nymph right; Π behind neck / Blank. For prototype, see reverse of AMNG III/2, 12 and HGC 3, 588. Holed for suspension in antiquity. VF.
From the Belgica Collection.
Clearly, this ancient jewelry piece was based on the reverse type of Neapolis hemidrachms struck circa 375-350 BC. The jeweler apparently copied an example where only the Π of the ethnic was visible, and such off-center strikes of the prototype issue were not uncommon.
