The Very Rare AU-50 Double Eagle 1861-O
Metal: Gold (0.900). Weight: 33.44 grams. Diametre: 34 mm.
The 1861-O is the last year of the New Orleans mint before the civil war. Mintage resumed in 1879.
One of the 1861-O particularities is that its tiny mintage of 17, 741 pieces has been made under three authorities (Federal government, State of Louisiana & Confederate States).
The elusive 1861-O is rare in all grades for most of them have been melted or preserved. Population of PCGS & NGC has been strongly inflated by resubmissions. It is thought that just 150 - 175 coins survive. Only less than 5 of them in mint state.
Not more than 35 - 45 (including this one) different 1861-O in AU can be accounted.
This great rarity with both its historical and low remaining pieces finds its place in all collections.
