GROUP OF FIVE TO OFFICER KIA ON SUBMARINE: 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Italy Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. J.S.Ryder. R.A.N.V.R. All medals impressed. Swing mounted, a few contact marks, otherwise uncirculated.

John Stuart Ryder, student of medicine, age 22, born at Brisbane, Qld; member of RANVR mobilized for service 09Jun1941; qualified anti-submarine course at HMAS Rushcutter 22Nov1941; from 07Feb1942 served out of London Depot; 29Jul1943 Ryder was designated Sub Hunter Officer on HMS Trooper when she sank Italian submarine Pietro Micca in the Strait of Otranto which connects the Adriatic Sea with the Ionian Sea and separates Italy from Albania; Sub Lieutenant J.S.Ryder RANVR died when the T Class submarine HMS Trooper (N91) under command of Lieut J.S.Wraith R.N., DSO, DSC, sailed from Beirut on 26Sep1943 for a patrol in the Aegean Sea off the Dodecanese Islands, including the Leros area and when she failed to return on 17Oct, was reported overdue, presumed lost to German mines around Leros, with all on board lost; Commemorated at the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
