(t) CHINA. Silver Dollar Pattern, Year 16 (1927). PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
L&M-962; K-690; Hsu-30; WS-0125; Wenchao-pg. 700#1120 (rarity two stars); Shanghai Museum-Mr. Shi Jiagan's collection-pg. 125#587. Struck to commemorate the first year anniversary of Chu Yu-pu as governor of Chihli. This nicely preserved and seldom encountered pattern Dollar offers flashy fields with crisp, well-defined motifs. The surfaces display signs of being gently handled along with a light russet patina and much remaining brilliance on both sides. This VERY RARE issue is always highly coveted when appearing on the market, and the opportunity to acquire such a significant Republican issue is sure to attract much attention.
While in command of the Chihli army, Chu Yu-pu would also gain command of the whole province, eventually becoming governor on 7 April 1926. His appointment didn't really come with any power and, during the Northern Expedition (an attempt to reunify China by Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Revolutionary Army and Feng Yuxiang's Guominjun), he was betrayed by a former subordinate and was executed by firing squad 6 months later.
From the Pinnacle Collection.
