JAPAN. Gold 10 Yen Pattern, Year 3 (1870). Osaka Mint. Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS SPECIMEN-61 Gold Shield.
KM-Pn19; J&V-Ma1; JNDA-pg. 73. A VERY RARE pattern in gold that is virtually identical to the adopted 10 Yen design that was first issued in 1871 (year 4), but was struck in an enlarged format, with the diameter registering at 32 millimeters versus the adopted 29.42 millimeters. This example, like all seen, was well-produced, with bold designs and strong reflective gleam in the fields. Light handling, as well as one mark on the reverse rim near 1 o'clock, account for the grade, although old orange tone helps to subdue the eye's recognition thereof. One of only five specimens traced of this issue, with examples held by the Bank of Japan Collection and the British Museum making only three examples available for private ownership. As such, a landmark opportunity for the collector seeking a relic from Japan's transitional period from largely hand-manufactured coinage to machine-produced circular types.
From the Pinnacle Collection.
Estimate: $100000.00- $150000.00
