CHINA. Kweichow. 20 Cents, Year 38 (1949). PCGS Genuine--Edge Repaired, EF Details Gold Shield.
L&M-616; K-758lll; KM-Y-430; WS-1116.An interesting subsidiary coinage from a province that didn't produce many coins during the late 19th to mid-20th centuries, the present piece, like other issues from this region is somewhat crude with an uneven strike and loss of definition of the design features near the rims. Unfortunately, the edge does exhibit light file marks as indicated on the PCGS insert as "Edge Repaired", but is somewhat obscured by the grommet holding the coin. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of the type displaying light attractive slate patina with lighter gray in the open areas and atop of the devices.

It is interesting to note that this issuance has at least two different die pairings, but does not appear to mix dies between the two sets. The two obverse dies appear to have been hubbed and are nearly identical save for a few minor details caused from degradation which sets them apart. The reverses on the other hand are distinctly different, each exhibiting characteristics that make classification fairly easy. The two most obvious die markers are severe die rust showing evidence of clashed dies coupled with thinner character strokes while the other die, such as the present example exhibit smoother surfaces and thicker character strokes. Surely an issue worthy of further in depth research from the specialist certain to catch the attention of serious academics actively searching out variations to add to their collections.

Estimate: $1200.00- $1600.00
