World Coins, Austria, Leopold I, thaler, 1704, bust r., rev. crowned imperial eagle (KM.1413), the slightest of lines to the reverse parallel to the sword, otherwise good very fine
The so – called Habsburg jaw can be clearly seen in the portrait of Leopold on this coin, and indeed in many paintings and statues of the king. His jawline was said to have been so prominent that his subjects coined the name 'Leopold the Hogmouth' for their King. The jaw was most likely a result of generations of intermarriage within the royal family at the time, and thus became a distinctive family trait.
