Medals by Subject, Sport, Olympic Games, IX Olympiad, Amsterdam, 1928, uniface bronze plaquette, by Chris van der Hoef (1875–1933), signed (engraved) with his CHJ monogram, head of an athlete l., engraved legend, VAINQUEUR, 133.5mm., the reverse with 'lugs' for mounting, much as made, extremely fine
Chris van der Hoef competed in the Olympic Games Art (Sculpture – medals and plaquettes) Competition, winning the silver medal, in a field of 23, with a medal entitled Médaille pour les Jeux Olympiques 1928. The cataloguers can only speculate that 'Vainquer' was actually entered in the competition, but it is worth noting that a medal of that title was entered by the Belgian medallist Pierre de Soete. The Olympic participants' medal was the work of C. Wienecke (see Lot 730). There was no example of this medal in the Harmer Johnson Collection (Heritage Auctions, 18 November 2016).
