De Granvelle was in Naples where he presented the Standard, which had been previously consecrated by Pope Pius V, to Don John, who had arrived in the city in August 1571. Don John was at Messina in September and then in command at the famous Battle of Lepanto on the 7th October, where the Ottomans under the command of Ali Pacha were defeated, losing all but 40 of their fleet of 300 ships.
