The Eccles Collection | Æthelred II (978-1016), Penny, 'First Hand' type, c. 979-985, London, Leofric, ÆÞELRÆD REX ANGLO'X, diademed bust right, rev. + L[E]OFRIC M-O LVNDONI, hand of Providence descending from heavens, dividing Alpha and Omega, 1.20g, 4h (North 766; BMC IIa; Spink 1144), cracked, perforated and repaired in recent antiquity, otherwise a very rare type with only recorded for this moneyer on EMC and with the lovely full mint signature for London, about very fine details.
Sir John Evans, writing in the Numismatic Chronicle (Vol. 4, 1864) wrote of the discovery of a hoard of some 500 Anglo-Saxon coins found at the corner of Old Butter Market and White Hart Lane in Ipswich on 24 October 1863. Only between 100 and 120 were available for study, and with only two exceptions, they were of the [Hand of Providence] type. Their general condition was noted as; 'mostly in such a state of oxidisation as to break at the slightest touch.' Evans noted at least two coins with the reverse legend 'LOFRIC M-O LVNDONI', but none with the signature LEOFRIC, although a later SCMB listing (June 1969, H2226) confirms an obverse die link to the present coin. Whilst uncertain, the preservation of this coin is consistent with the general description laid out by Evans and indeed no immediate parallel can be traced by this cataloguer either in the mammoth Lockett Cabinet nor in the national collection.
Estimate: £60 - £100
