The Eccles Collection | Anne (1702-1714), Roses and Plumes Halfcrown, 1710 NONO, seven strings to harp, inverted Ns and 'As for Vs' on edge, •+•+• DECAS • ET • TATAMEU • AUUO • REGUI • UOUO •+•+• lettered downwards, 14.97g, 8h (Spink 3607; ESC 1373 [R2]), patchy irregular toning with heavier flawing to cheek and above fillet, otherwise almost very fine, the edge variety extremely clear, very rare thus.
A degree of scepticism is always advised in the reading and interpretation of reported 'errors', especially with forms on edge lettering. Most supposed varieties can be accounted by the vagaries of the castaing machine process from collar slippage to simple die breaks. However in this instance, the reported variety is most apparent, although intriguingly the erroneous inverted 'A for V' punch is composed of a thin descending bar whereas the usual As are formed of an ascending thick bar. It is also worth noting that all Ns on edge are equally inverted in error, although this is overlooked in the latest ESC revision.
Estimate: £100 - £150
