John V Palaeologus, with John VI. 1341-1391. BI Tornese (12mm, 0.64 g, 12h). Constantinople mint. Struck 1354-1376. Long cross, with four B's and four stars in quarters / Three-quarter-length figures of the two emperors standing facing, John VI to left, holding scepter, John V to right, holding labarum or akakia between them. DOC 1197; PCPC 293; LPC p. 144, 8; SB 2533. Lightly toned, minor porosity. Near VF. Very rare.

From the Collection of a Philhellene. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 82 (16 September 2009), lot 1158 (there as Andronicus III).

Bendall originally identified this type as a Half-Basilikon, tentatively attributing it to either Andronicus II and Michael IX, or Andronicus II and III. Upon further analysis, Grierson identified it as a Tornese, and noted that the presence of the labarum/akakia being held jointly by the two emperors, suggested it was an issue of John V and VI which, since the publication of LPC, is how this rare type has been classified.
