JAPAN. Silver Fantasy Nan Ryo Oban, ND (late 19th Century). VERY FINE.
Diameter: 163x97 mm; Weight: 161.46 gms. Well made with bold stamps, textured fields, and a deep gray tone throughout. The reverse is blank.

An interesting and not very well published aspect of Japanese numismatics with lots of variety. These fantasy issues seem to have been manufactured in the late 19th century to accommodate collectors who had taken an interest in East Asian numismatics. The mass exodus of precious metal coinage after Commodore Perry opened Japan for trade resulted in supply shortages and as a direct result, these fantasy pieces were manufactured to fill the wants of eager Western collectors.
