The Portland Collection, Commemorative Medals, [Commonwealth], Netherlands, William III, Prince of Orange (1650-1702), later King of England, Education of the Prince, hollow silver medal, 1654, by Pieter van Abeele, made of two halves united at the rim, within a wide border of flowers and oranges, three-quarters dr. bust of the young Prince r., wearing a soft, plumed cap, signed in monogram PVA. F., on band below, AN - 1654 - WILHELMVS III D.G / PRINC.ARAVS.ETC., rev. the laur. four-year old prince, dressed as a Roman soldier, stands before the std. figure of Minerva with lance, Medusa shield and owl, at top the name Jehovah radiates on them and the landscape beyond, TIME DEVM, signed PV.AB.F., 64.5mm. (vL.II, 376; Frederiks 1e/2c; Scher, The Proud Republic, 18), reverse extremely fine, obverse nearly so, though a little rubbed
Scher comments on the possible sources of the obverse portrait though he does not discuss the reverse where Prince William wears the same Roman toga in which he was painted, also in 1654, by Gerard van Honthorst (now in the collections of Het Loo Palace).
