The French Government invested considerable funds into the rebuilding of the fishing port which was inaugurated on July 17, 1927 and 15,810 tonnes of fish were landed in the following year. Whilst Lorient-Kéroman is still the leading French fishing port, it is also remembered for the massive submarine base built by the Germans in World War II.
