SASANIAN KINGS. Shapur II. AD. 309-379. AR Obol (0.52 gm; 11 mm). Obverse; Shapur II turning right, head of a ram in front of face, reverse: fire alatr with attendants and figure in the fire altar. Some minor chipping on the edge, otherwise well struck. Choice Superb EF. Nice original find patina. Extremely Rare and unpublished.Ram has always been the symbol of Persian Empire starting from Achaemenids. Aries which is represented by Ram has also direct association with "Fire" which is a scared element of Zoroastrian religion. Astrology was extremely strong among the Zoroastrian religious leaders as well as the royalty in Sasanian era. Many examples of such knowledge have been recorded in the Book of Kings (Shahnameh) by Ferdowsi. Aries symbol of Ram is also seen numerously in Sasanian seals and identified as "Parvin".
