Lower Canada. Banque Du Peuple "Side View" Penny Token 1839 UNC Details (Obverse Scratched) NGC, Br-525, LC-11C, Courteau-39 (R9), Robins-29460. Plain edge. Coin alignment. Variety with 13 palings in left fence. Banque Du Peuple on ribbon. Supposedly struck by the manufacturer on the bank's request, or struck as a mint trial. The strike is near-flawless and the surfaces gleam with underlying luster. Several light scratches are noted by the date or on the left side of the bank building. Fewer than 10 pieces are believed to exist, with this being the finest we have seen and exceeding the Robins-McKay-Clements specimen. Cataloged in 1995 as "one of the highlights of the James A. Stack, Sr. Collection of Canadian Colonial tokens." Mislabeled on the holder as LC-11B. Sold with old collector envelope detailing provenance.
Ex. James A. Stack, Sr. Collection (Stack's March 1995, Lot 83)
