Lower Canada. Banque Du Peuple "Side View" Penny Token 1839 AU58 Brown NGC, KM-Tn17 (Rare), Br-525, LC-11C, Courteau-39 (R9), Robins-29460. Plain edge. Coin alignment. The undisputed key to the 'Side View' series, pairing the Bank of Montreal obverse legend with the Banque du Peuple ribbon reverse. Originally considered an error, scholars now believe it was deliberately struck by a manufacturer to serve as some sort of sample piece, and was thus never intended to be released into circulation. According to Charlton, fewer than 10 specimens are known today, with the Standard Catalog of World Coins stating that the figure may be fewer than 8 pieces and leaving it unvalued. The strike is decent, with only a few minor handling marks. Extremely rare, and the finest straight-graded example we have handled. Sold with old collector envelope detailing provenance.
