Galla Placidia, daughter of Theodosius I and mother of Valentinian III (died 450 AD). AV Solidus, Ravenna mint, 421-422 AD. Obv. D N GALLA PLACIDIA P F AVG. Draped bust right, wearing pearl diadem, Chi-Rho on shoulder, Hand of God above, holding crown. Rev. SALVS REI PVBLICAE. Victory seated right on cuirass, inscribing Chi-Rho on shield resting on her knee; R-V across fied; COMOB in exergue. RIC X 1333 (R4); C. 3 (Fr.150). AV. 4.31 g. 21.00 mm. RRR. Very rare. A superb example, perfectly centred on a broad unclipped flan, brilliant and lightly toned. From masterly engraved dies and virtually as struck. EF/Good EF. Ex Gemini I, 2005, 486.

This solidus was probably struck during the brief reign of Placidia's second husband, Constantius III, who was named coemperor by Honorius, but not recognized by Theodosius II in the east. Production may have continued after Constantius' death, when Placidia remained an honored Augusta at the court of Honorius until she quarrelled with him and fled to Constantinople.
