According to Roman legend, Castor and Pollux assisted the victorious Republican army in the Battle of Lake Regillus against the Latins and the final king of Rome, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, at the beginning of the 6th century BC. This reverse type portrays a moment following the battle in which the Dioscuri watered their horses at the Lacus Iuturnae (Ovid, Fasti i, 706-8). Aulus Postumius Albus Regillensis, dictator of Rome at the time and presumed ancestor of the moneyer, ordered that a temple to the Dioscuri be built at the place where their horses drank.
