Japan. Banknote. 1873-1899. 5 Yen. F. Old National Bank 5 Yen JNDA11-12. 80.00~190.00mm. With the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Japan started its drastic modernization and industrialization process. In the process, before acquiring the modern printing technologies from the West, the Japanese government ordered the production of Japan's National Bank notes to the Continental Bank Note Company in the United States in 1873. The Japanfs National Banks were based on the American National Bank Act and the designs of their banknotes were also very similar to those of American National Bank notes, while the vignettes used in them depict Japanese motifs such as Nihon-bashi Bridge and Mt. Fuji in the present note.
