Rwanda Banque Nationale du Rwanda 500 Francs 15.05.1961 Pick 4a PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. As European powers began relinquishing their colonial possessions, new economic unions were forming. Rwanda and Burundi continued an economic pact after independence, but it was short lived. For a few months in 1964, handstamped or embossed Rwanda-Burundi currency circulated in Rwanda, until new banknotes arrived from Thomas de la Rue. It appears that the three smaller denominations feature a handstamp, which is clearly visible to the naked eye. The 500 and 1000 Francs, however, were embossed with a colorless stamp. The embossed stamp reads "Banque Nationale du Rwanda" and features a signature of Jean-Baptiste Habyarimana. Luckily, when viewing the back of the banknote, part of the stamp can be seen, confirming that this banknote was purposed for Rwanda. A very rare African type, which existed for only a brief time in 1964.
