Ancient Coins, Marcus Junius Brutus (85-42 BC), denarius, struck c. 54 BC, Rome, BRVTVS, bare head of L. Junius Brutus r., rev. AHALA, bare head of C. Servilius Ahala r., wt. 3.55gms. (Cr.433/2; Syd.907), off-centre, otherwise good very fine
Interestingly, this coin commemorates Brutus' ancestor L. Junius Brutus who, in 509 BC, initiated the conspiracy to overthrow Tarquin, the last King of Rome. The reverse, or perhaps the second obverse, honours Gaius Servilius Ahala who assassinated Spurius Maelius in 349 BC, to stop his tyrannical plans to become king. Later, in 44 BC, Brutus himself would ignite a conspiracy to end the 'dictatorship' of Julius Caesar.
