Thirty medals in silver were allotted in 1845 and distributed 1846. In 1785 Joshua Reynolds, was commissioned by Catherine II of Russia to paint a picture for her on any historical subject. "The Infant Hercules Strangling Serpents" was completed the following year. At the time the medal was struck, the painting was in the Imperial Collection at St. Petersburg 'in deplorable condition'. It remains in the Hermitage.
