Australia, Victoria (1837-1901), gold Sovereign, 1857, Sydney Branch Mint, second young head left with wreath of banksia in hair, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D: rev. AUSTRALIA across centre, crown above within tied laurel wreath, SYDNEY MINT above, ONE SOVEREIGN below, 7.99g (Bentley 631; Marsh 362 R; KM 4; Fr.10; McDonald 104). Lightly toned with usual light bagmarks evident, just a hint of wear to centre of obverse with original mint bloom, otherwise extremely fine and a pleasing example, rare.

Calendar year mintage 449,000.

The second young head type Sydney Mint Sovereign was designed and engraved by Leonard Charles Wyon.
